We were about to leave Long Island in the last update. We had a wonderful time there and really enjoy the people.
Next on our "bucket list" the Jumentos or Ragged Islands. We have been wanting to visit these more remote
islands since we first heard of them! Now, equipped with a water maker and plenty of groceries-- we did!
Beautiful, bountiful and once again the people are wonderful. The waters reminded me of typical Florida Keys
water on a day when the viz is good - except they are this way ALL THE TIME!
Darrell worked on his spear fishing technique there. We ate well.....lobster and conch. One of the lobsters he
caught made the ones we have to measure to be legal in FL look like dwarfs! Yummy!!!!
At 0400 on Valentines Day, we got a wake up call. We were sleeping soundly when a sound like the boat was
exploding woke us. I thought the mast was coming down as I ran past it! We got outside in time for Darrell to
push the bow of Falcons Nest off midship. They were leaving for Cuba and with main sail up and motor on in
the dark - they misjudged the turn. He was looking down at his GPS and turned too early, hitting us with his
bow rollers right in our anchor locker (just forward of where we were sleeping). Luckily the holes are above the
water line or we would have had major problems - remember how remote I said it is. Anyway at daylight, we
assessed the damages and took pictures then went in to Duncantown to file a police report.
Phil postponed his Cuba departure for a day and after we finished at the police station, we went to church. First
time I've ever taken my dog to church but we went and they didn't bat an eye!! The heaviness of the damage to
the boat kinda made us feel dejected so we began looking for a window to return home.
Within a few days, we had it so we headed west towards Cay Sal Bank. In about 48 hours, we were there to
wait out the passage of a weather system involving high winds. We stayed behind the protection of Anguilla
Cays for a couple of days.
While we were there, we saw a man on the island and he asked us for water. We gave him 1 1/2 gallons water
and some bread on day one and gave him about 3 gallons and more food on day 2. He also had a large
loggerhead turtle that he was planning to eat - he offered to share but I just couldn't. Not sure where he was
from or where he was going. He gave Darrell a phone number to call and report he is okay but something got
lost in the translation and we couldn't get in touch with his contact person.
We had a fantastic day sail back to Key Largo and we were on a mooring ball in Largo Sound by 10 PM. It
feels good to be back where we can talk to family and friends. I wish we could stay on the moorings in Largo
Sound long term like the ones in Marathon. We're back in the routine (kinda) and getting estimates for fixing
the boat. We hope the other guy's insurance is going to pay for it but he's in Cuba and we can't get in touch
with him. We're in Key Largo Harbor Marina and I'm working on bright work AGAIN!! And this is where we will repair the violation to Alibi.
Sorry this is so late in posting but I couldn't get the formatting right.
Alibi is currently in a slip in Key Largo Harbor Marina and Darrell and I are in Texas with family. His mom had a stroke in March and we are helping her with therapy right now. Please stay tuned for what our next adventure brings!
